The stomach creates hydrochloric acid to break down food and kill bacteria. Acid reflux occurs when the acid spills out of the stomach into the esophagus, sometimes reaching as far as the lungs. About 20 percent of adults will experience symptoms of acid reflux at some point in their lives. Symptoms include chest pain, belching, coughing, nausea, vomiting, and trouble swallowing.
